Everything matters. That always seemed intuitively correct to me and being both a professional critic and a citizen in a political economy reinforces and expands that every day. As the former, everything I see and read and hear can connect to and open up an insight into everything else—reading dystopian fiction gave me a different view of the Metropolitan Opera’s new production of Carmen than every other writer—and as the latter, my fury over the willed ignorance of history and the actual functioning of society in our mainstream political media is an important source of inspiration, it’s why I fight.
