Get Up And Get Down
What is the best place for listening to music, the situation where you hear and feel music in the most meaningful and satisfying way? Let’s take good acoustics as a given, that the sound in the space is no issue, and instead think about hearing and listening, nothing to distract the ears and nothing getting in the way of the synapses firing and the body feeling all the emotions and fascinations and pleasures the music has to deliver, directly and personally, to you.
That experience is subjective, so think subjectively: what time of day does music sound best to you, what season, stomach empty or full, what colors surround you, or are your eyes closed? We all hear and feel differently, so this is about as singular as it gets, but we’re also all human, with fundamental shared mental and emotional traits that are embedded in our very genes. So when I say I’ve realized what the best place/situation to hear music is, I’m confident that many of you reading this will find it, if not the best, then at least fantastic (and I’m hoping many of you know about this place already). And while this is unscientific, it’s also far more than anecdotal; I’ve been listening to music for decades, not just radio and recordings but public performances in every place from basements, bathrooms, living rooms, record stores, bars, lounges, nightclubs, concert hall that seat a couple dozen to those that seat thousands, opera houses, subway stations, boats, the great out-of-doors all over. In other words, this comes out of enormous experience. And that experience tells me this:
